[:en]3 March 2015 (Dubai, United Arab Emirates): A team from Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, providing free vision screening to visitors at the recent Ladies Day Out event in Dubai, found that almost half of the nearly 200 visitors (female and male) screened required some sort of professional follow up, highlighting the need for regular eye examinations.
Most of the follow ups required were for minor issues such as refraction (spectacles), irritations such as dry eye, and consultations for laser corrective surgery; however, some issues were more potentially serious with high eye pressure checks needed, astigmatism investigated, and family histories of diabetes and glaucoma discovered raising the need for a more detailed eye examination.
The Moorfields team conducted an eye test and an eye pressure test on visitors to the Moorfields exhibition stand over the course of the three days of the Ladies Day Out event.
Kanni Sureshkumar, Optometrist at Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, noted: “Of the 208 screenings Moorfields undertook at the event, we made 93 referrals for additional examinations, mainly for a range of minor issues such as vision prescriptions and dry eyes. In addition, the team needed to explore some general health conditions that affect the eye and help people better understand laser corrective surgery and contact lenses.”
Vanessa Sharman, Quality Officer and Optometrist at Moorfields Eye Hospital Dubai, who led the hospital’s screening team, said: “Almost inevitably, we found some visitors required more detailed follow up because of an issue they are facing or a family history of disease for which we strongly recommend regular eye examinations, for example to protect the eyes against the complications of diabetes. Unfortunately, the eyes are not yet one of those regular health examinations we naturally think of but it is important to monitor the eyes, especially at a young age, when treatment is very effective, and for those with specific health risks that may affect eye health, such as diabetes, as well as those older people who may face eye conditions as they age. The simple message is that regular annual screening is vital to maintaining the eye health of the community.”
